30% of Hiring Managers See No Difference Between In-Person and Video Interviews

1 Aug 2024

Video interviews have become an integral part of the hiring process, allowing companies to connect with candidates remotely and efficiently. In our recent poll, 39% of hiring managers advised that conducting video interviews allows for a broader talent pool, compared to conducting interviews in-person. 30% of participating hiring managers felt that video interviews are no different than in-person interviews. With the ever evolving hiring techniques, we understand the importance of conducting video interviews and ensuring that these interviews are both engaging and effective for both parties.

It is of utmost importance that your interview process positively reflects your organisation. We have outlined 9 helpful tips below to ensure your video interview is both professional and productive.

1. Be Mindful of Your Body Language

Treat a video interview with the same respect as an in-person meeting. 55% of communication is nonverbal and 38% is conveyed through tone of voice. Maintain eye contact, sit up straight, nod to show you're engaged, and don't forget to smile.

2. Dress Appropriately

Even if you're working from home, dress professionally to signal the importance of the interview. Wearing a blouse, collared shirt, or nice sweater helps align the video interview with a traditional office setting.

3. Highlight Your Company Culture

Since candidates can't experience your company culture in person, emphasise your organisations core values and mission. Share stories about team events and discuss your office setup to give candidates a clear picture of your workplace environment. As mentioned above, the interview process is a window to your organisation. It is important to provide a positive impression from the first video interview.

4. Review Past Interviews and Take Notes

Prior to the interview, review notes from previous conversations with the candidate. During the interview, take notes on their responses and engagement. Inform candidates you're taking notes to ensure they understand you're attentive.

5. Be Considerate and Compassionate

Minimise background noise and distractions to respect your candidate. If interruptions occur, acknowledge them and appreciate the candidate's flexibility. Show understanding if the candidate faces similar disruptions.

6. Ask Consistent Questions

Use the same set of core questions for all candidates to ensure fairness and consistency. This approach helps in evaluating and comparing responses accurately. An interview scorecard can aid in maintaining unbiased evaluations.

7. Have a Backup Plan

Technical issues can arise despite thorough preparation. These can include internet connectivity issues and cameras or microphones not working correctly. Have an alternative method, such as a phone call, Zoom or a video call via Whatsapp, ready in case of technical difficulties. Discuss the backup plan with the candidate to ensure mutual convenience.

8. Silence Your Phone and Mute Notifications

Give candidates your full attention by silencing your phone and muting notifications. This prevents disruptions and shows respect for the candidate's time, enhancing your company's professional image.

9. Log On Early

Join the video meeting five minutes early to avoid keeping the candidate waiting. This demonstrates punctuality and allows you to prepare for the interview without last-minute rushes.

It is essential to ensure that your interview process is seamless and fosters a positive experience for candidates, whether it is in person or via video interviews.
