What really drives the final hiring decision? The data is clear.

12 Mar 2026

We recently surveyed our finance network to understand what truly influences the final hiring choice, and the results were decisive:

What stands out immediately is that 76% of all responses were focused on cultural fit and long-term potential. That tells us that most hiring decisions are being made with the future firmly in mind, not just the immediate vacancy.

Technical expertise, while essential, ranked lowest overall, reinforcing the view that it is a minimum requirement rather than the deciding factor. Once that bar is met, it’s the less tangible qualities that become the differentiator.

Commercial acumen sits in the middle at 13%, valued by employers but often seen as something that can be developed when the right foundation is already in place.

Cultural fit leads the way. Even in highly technical or commercial roles, businesses are prioritising how someone will integrate into the team, align with values, and contribute to the wider environment. Skills matter, but attitude and behaviours often decide the final call.

What does this mean for hiring and careers?
  • For employers: prioritising cultural alignment and future potential significantly reduces hiring risk and improves retention. Skills can be trained; mindset and values are much harder to change.
  • For candidates: your CV might secure the interview, but how you demonstrate adaptability, emotional intelligence, and long-term ambition often secures the offer.

At Darwin Hawkins, this is exactly why we look beyond CVs. We focus on fit, potential, and long-term value, not just what someone can do on day one.

If you’re hiring or considering your next move and want a clearer picture of what really matters, let’s have the conversation.
